I’ve always been drawn to the interplay of beautiful colors, patterns, and textures found in Moroccan tile. I love to browse images of tiles on Pinterest, all the while filling my head with inspiration for my next crochet design. Last February, in need of some bright color to contrast the dreary winter landscape, I designed the Marrakech Motif, a 7-inch crochet square that called to mind the palette and geometry of a cheerful Moroccan tile.
More recently, the center of the motif called to me to be expanded into a mandala, to allow further play with the texture and patterning. A couple of late nights later, the Marrakech Mandala was born. But I wasn’t quite finished yet. The mandala makes for a beautiful piece of decor, but I decided to add to its utility by expanding the pattern into a cushion. And thus the Marrakech Pattern Pack was born.
It’s a versatile pattern, allowing you to create a crochet square, mandala, and cushion, all from the same central motif. You can even make the mandala with a smooth round edge or a textured, scalloped edge.

I tend to favor bright colors, but the pattern looks great in muted colors too. Here are images from tester Ana Morais Soares in gorgeous soft tones.
I hope you’ll fall in love with the endless array of possible color combinations and intricate texture in the same way that I have!
The pattern is available on Ravelry and Etsy now! I hope you enjoy working it up, and look forward to seeing your photos on social media with the tag #marrakechmotif!
